Understanding the Main area

The Main area of the vault is where the latest released revisions of documents reside. Depending on how its Work Isolation Mode (WIM) is configured, the Main area can be used to create and modify documents. The WIM setting of a vault is managed by a system administrator.

If WIM is cleared, you can create or modify documents in the Main area using workflows. However, each document under revision in a workflow is visible to other users. That is, other users will see the latest revision in progress, instead of the last released revision. There may be several states in the document’s workflow, depending on how the revision was initiated.

If WIM is enabled, you can create and modify documents in the Main area using only the Create Working Copy and Submit Working Copy commands. However, a document under revision will be isolated from all other users. That is, all other users will see the last released revision of the document (which will be shown as locked), not the current working copy. No one can edit the document other than the person who made the working copy, until the working copy is submitted, which will place the document into a released state.

If WIM is enabled but read-only, you cannot create or modify documents in the Main area under any circumstances, and must use a work area to do this. In this situation, the configuration of the work area determines how documents are modified.
